The Training and Development area’s primary goal is to offer the University of Mississippi’s staff and faculty an opportunity for continual growth. Our seminars cover an array of topics to improve your professional skills and personal development.

LEAD: Lead Yourself

Lead Yourself is a one-day program designed to increase self-management skills useful in enhancing work performance.  This program is available and highly recommended for all employees who are not in a supervisory role.

Topics may include: Time & Energy Management, Your Role in Staff Performance Appraisals (It’s a Partnership), Dealing with Difficult People, Accountability, Code of Ethics and Conduct, Effective Communications, Managing Your Boss, and Motivation.

LEAD: Lead Your Team

Lead Your Team is a three-day program designed to develop the skills necessary to appropriately supervise at the University of Mississippi. Supervisors and managers are encouraged to participate and learn how to supervise professionally and accordingly. This is a core course and employees with supervisory and people management responsibilities are expected to attend the program. 

Topics may include:  From Worker to Manager, JAQ Overview, Best Practices for Searches, Behavioral Based Interviewing, Orienting Your New Employee, The ABCs of FLSA & Timekeeping, How to Influence, Dealing with Difficult People, Workplace Conflict, Progressive Discipline, Code of Ethics and Conduct, Effective Feedback & Performance Partnerships, Coaching Up and Down the Generations, FMLA and Donated Leave, and Reality Based Leadership.

These topics enrich positive supervisor practices and behaviors; communications, value, leadership and interdependence.

LEAD (formerly SOAR)

The Lead Responsibly & Lead Simply program is hosted by the Department of Human Resources and the Office of the Provost.

The two half-day program is designed to enhance your understanding of leadership through realizing the significance of effective empowerment, appreciation, and development.  This program includes topics to enrich strong leadership “with a capital L” behaviors within the parameters of the university policies, practices, and procedures. More information coming soon.

Invited managers, directors of all levels, chairs, deans, and senior level officials should attend. This program is for all leaders, not just newly hired leaders.

Invited leaders will receive a formal invitation through email.

06/05 Social Security: Securing Your Future (in person): Social Security is a retirement income source with some control and a variety of selections. It is also said to be one of the most important phases of retirement planning. During this session, you will learn about how to quality for social security, how to determine your benefits, select the optimum time to begin collecting the benefit, and become familiar with other types of benefits such as disability, survivor options and Medicare. This session will be presented by a representative from the Social Security Administration.
